Emergency Temporary Shelter Program
The Emergency Temporary Shelter officially began when KCDI became a member of International Childsafe. In the last 5 years, we have helped dozens of Children and also vulnerable, pregnant women.
Our School opens our doors day or night to:
- Children found sleeping on the streets
- Children in extreme danger
- Battered women with small Children
- Battered men with small Children
- Homeless pregnant women and pregnant women with mental health problems
We work with child rape victims and women who are victims of rape.
Working in coordination with the local authorities, social services, the police, International Childsafe, local partners and counsellors, our School provides immediate shelter, food, medical care, clothing and other necessities. In some cases, we will support the birth of a New-Born and provide Post-natal care, all the while providing accommodation, until the mother is safely able to take care of her infant and work. Other procedures are done, in the case of incapacitating mental illness which puts risk to the infant’s life.
We have formed a Team with social services and women’s care groups, to provide carefully thought-out support. Our School is the only such place in Kampot Province and as such, we are called upon frequently, sometimes even for cases outside Kampot Province.
In cases of Child-rape and abuse, then we work in coordination with social services, Hagar, the police, sometimes the local Courthouse and with special counsellors who help us in providing psychological and emotional support. In these awful and tragic cases, then our Children stay with us long-term, to be cared for and healed, with love and nurturing in the safe and peaceful ambient of our School, whilst receiving scholastic education and tuition in Traditional Cambodian Music and Performing Arts.
Some pregnant women in emergency cases come with STDs and we coordinate with healthcare providers and local partners to provide medical treatment.
Our wonderful and loving Staff, some of whom have been at our School for three decades, receive special training in order to care for our Children, and those of our Children who have special needs because of suffering abuse.
