We announce with very sad hearts, the death of our former student Noun Saran, who died last night from a heart attack aged 31

Saran came to our school as a little boy in 1995. He was the great-grandson of Loak Ta Hout Toch, a very great Pin Peat master and survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime. Saran came to join us for our 25th anniversary celebrations in December 2019 and had recently settled in Kampot after working in Phnom Penh. Last December, we had a lovely time together with his younger brother Toch Saroath and other former students. A photograph taken of us here, shows Saran to the right of the photo.

It is with great sadness that I write personally about his death. He was at our school when I was director in residence, and I took care of him together with my colleagues and we watched him grow up. As parents we always hope that our children will have long lives and out-live us, so it is profoundly sad when their lives are cut short. Saran was a very special and beautiful person, highly intelligent, mature for his age and a deep thinker, but also with a wonderful and mischievous sense of humour.

We share here a photograph of him in 1995 as a little boy, learning the Sampho drum with Ngèth Savuth sitting behind him helping.

Rest in Peace Dear Saran and may God Bless You and Take Care of You.

Love
Catherine and everyone at KCDI
